Traveling south on Highway 25 through Berea to the Madison-Rockcastle County line is "Boone Gap" where Boone Trace incorporated a low passage through the mountain. It is located just east of the county line sign where the old US 25 curved around the mountain with a hidden Boone Gap Overlook built there in the 1930s. Historical Marker #1443 in Madison County commemorates "Daniel Boone’s Trace," the famous trail constructed by Daniel Boone and his party of pioneers in 1775. The Trace ran from Cumberland Gap to Fort Boonesborough.
