This drawing illustrates one way in which early Kentucky roads were improved. Cut logs were laid across a framework of supporting timbers and then covered with dirt. Although it helped lessen the potential for getting stuck in mud holes, it is easy to see how bumpy such a road could be to those traveling in a stagecoach. Courtesy of Hopewell Museum.
