Notch Plug

Pictured here is a notch plug. It is made of aspatsulen, which is a mixture of clay, sand and lime. It is roughly a conical shape. This piece was used to fill the iron vent in the hearth of a furnace stack. It was "tapped" by the founder to release the molten iron into the casting beds.
