During the troubling times of the 1930s and early 1940s, the New Deal brought many WPA Works projects. Many Kentucky counties were involved in making mattresses and comforters. In one Kentucky county alone more than 900 were made by low income farm families. Kentucky agents promoted the program, distributed applications, secured surplus ticking and cotton, held training schools to teach mattress and comforter making and managed community centers where families came to make their mattresses and comforters.
