Sam Houston

Just after the Alamo fell, Sam Houston, pictured here, defeated a Mexican army at the Battle of San Jacinto, which won Texas its independence. Houston became the president of the Republic of Texas. In 1845, when Texas was annexed to the United States, Houston became a senator and later governor.
