When Henry Clay, Jr. enlisted at Camp Oakland in Louisville, he listed among his "property" a "Negro man John." John was with Henry Clay, Jr. throughout his service in the Mexican-American War.
Henry Clay, Jr. wrote to his son, Henry Clay III, on Jan. 1, 1847. In the letter, he wrote, "John asks me to give Xmas compliments to you. He is still with me and has turned out on the whole a very good boy."
