John Washington Payne was a bugler for the "Orphan Brigade," Kentucky's most famous Confederate infantry unit. Brigadier General Roger W. Hanson led the Orphan Brigade but was killed at the Battle of Stones River. Courtesy of the Kentucky Historical Society.
