During the early part of the Civil War, Kentucky's former governor Charles S. Morehead was arrested by Union authorities. Confined in Fort Warren, located in Boston Harbor, for several months, Morehead's prominent friends eventually secured his release. He lived in exile for the remainder of the Civil War.
