Calvin Fairbank and Delia Webster helped Lewis Hayden (pictured here later in life) and his family to escape slavery in Lexington. They crossed the Ohio River at Maysville and the Hayden family intially made their way to Canada, then Detroit, Michigan. The Haydens eventually settled in Boston, Massachusetts, and became active in the Underground Railroad. Courtesy of the New York Public Library.
